KUALA TERENGGANU, Malaysia – The University of Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) is the first university to fully utilize blockchain technology to verify the authenticity of all graduating scroll beginning at the university’s 11th convocation ceremony.
Director of UniSZA Infostructure and Network Management Center, Dr. Mohd Khalid Awang said the use of blockchain technology to scan data for graduates could increase the public’s confidence in the validity of the scroll and could eliminate the issue of fake certificates in the community.
According to him, through an application known as myBLOCKCERTS, 3,473 scrolling data was encrypted and stored on UniSZA’s private blockchain connected to various nodes and locations to ensure it could not be hacked or forged.
“The main advantages of using this technology are that all encrypted data will be secure in terms of data availability, transparency and integrity.
“For the validation process, it is carried out directly without the need for a third party through distributed ledger technology.
“Therefore, the authenticity of the scroll can be verified by anyone regardless of time and geography,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Mohd Khalid said users, employers or anyone could scan the unique QR code on the graduation scroll using a smartphone camera or download the MyBlockcerts version of iOS or Android.
He said the scan results of the QR code would display graduation information such as full name, program of study, graduation date and degree.
“In addition, these applications have several features that enhance the relationship between universities, alumni and industry,” he said.
The original project was started by the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof Dr R. Badlishah Ahmad, a member of the research team of the Faculty of Information and Computing and the Center for Infostructure and Network Management (PPIR) in collaboration with Interstream Sdn Bhd.
“With this success, UniSZA would like to offer blockchain technology expertise as well as collaboration between institutions of higher learning or agencies that require data storage services through UniSZA-based Ethereum blockchain platform and certificate validation using MyBlockcerts,” he said.
UniSZA is the 18th public institution of higher learning, located in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. The university is considered the biggest “comprehensive university” in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and to be one of the most respected Islamic-based institution of higher learning in Malaysia. It has produced thousands of graduates in any fields, since its establishment in 1980.
